چکیده

Monensin (1), a carboxylic polyether antibiotic has been extensively used as an anticoccidial agent for poultry1} and to improve the efficiency of feed utilization in ruminant' animals2^. Despite the considerable economic and environmental implications of this extensive use in animals, few data are available on the detoxification processes of such molecules. Wedescribed recently the bioconversion of nigericin3) by Sebekia benihana NRRL 111 114). This soil bacterium was found to convert nigericin in three successive steps, giving compoundswhich had no ionophoric and antibiotic properties. S. benihana also proved to be efficient on monensin, which was converted to three major compounds in similar fashion. This paper deals with the determination of the structures of these three products, and of their antibiotic activity and ionophoric properties. Monensin (40mg in 2ml ethanol solution) was

Anthracene degradation by an oligotrophic bacterium isolated from refinery soil

Anthracene is a widespread environmental pollutant with carcinogenic and genotoxic properties. Biodegradation is a simple, cost-effective and safe technique to clean-up contaminated environments. The aims of this study are isolation and characterization of an oligotrophic bacterium with the ability to degrade anthracene and the assessment of in vitro biodegradation process. For this purpose pet...

Microbial biotransformation products of cyclosporin A.

In order to mimic the human metabolic pathway of cyclosporin A (CyA) a total of 28 bacterial and 72 fungal strains was screened for their ability to transform CyA. Among 3 bacteria and 11 fungi, which produced the main human metabolite OL-17 [eta HyMeBmt1]CyA, Actinoplanes sp. (ATCC 53771) achieved the best transformation rate (5.4%). Furthermore, the two N-demethylated minor products [Leu4]CyA...

Clinical, laboratory and pathological findings in sub-acute monensin intoxication in goats

Toxic effects of monensin, a polyether antibiotic mainly used as a coccidiostat, have been described in a wide range of animals. The present study was performed to investigate the toxic effects of monensin in goats. Seven adult goats were administered sodium monensin, 13.5 mg kg-1, daily for five consecutive days via gastric gavage. Monensin toxicity was evaluated by clinical signs, serum bioch...

Biotransformation of Artemisinin by using a Novel Soil Isolated Microorganism

Artemisinin is a potential antimalarial drug effective against the multidrug resistant forms of Malarial Parasites. The current production of artemisinin is insufficient to meet the global demand. In the present study microbial biotransformation of arteannuin B, a biogenetic precursor of artemisinin to the later has been investigated. Screening studies carried out on several soil borne microorg...
